Once a year, the historic centre of Mesagne, in the heart of Puglia, steps back several centuries. The closing evening of the Fiera Medievale Franca, known as La Grande Chiusura, turns lanes and squares into a living stage. It is the night when the whole festival comes together.

A procession descending from the castle

The night begins with a spectacle in motion. A historical procession sets off from the Norman-Swabian Castle, the landmark that watches over the town.

Costumed figures, banners and drums wind through the old streets. Stone walls and narrow passages make the perfect backdrop, and the scene feels remarkably real once the light fades.

Piazza IV Novembre becomes a chessboard

The centrepiece is the living chessboard in Piazza IV Novembre. Instead of wooden pieces, people in period dress play the roles of kings, knights and pawns.

Every move is staged, and every capture becomes a little piece of theatre. Even if you have never played chess, the drama is easy to follow. Arrive early to find a spot with a good view of the whole square.

Swords, dance and medieval attractions

Beyond the main events, the historic centre fills with life. Combat demonstrations echo off the stone, while dancers bring a lighter, more festive energy to the evening.

  • Clashing blades and armoured duels in the open air
  • Medieval dances that often draw spectators into the circle
  • Period attractions tucked into side streets and courtyards
  • The glow of the old town after dark, ideal for atmospheric photos

It suits families with children, who tend to be fascinated by knights and costumes. Couples and groups of friends will find it just as easy to lose an evening here.

Tips for enjoying the finale

Plan to arrive in the early evening, so you can see the procession and still find a place in the square. Wear comfortable shoes, because the best way to explore is on foot along the cobbled lanes.

Leave time to wander without a plan. Some of the best moments happen away from the main stage, in a quiet corner where a performance begins unannounced. Entry to the event is free, so you can move freely between the different areas.

Make a night of Mesagne

Mesagne rewards a slow visit. Before the show, take a walk through the old town and look at the castle by daylight.

Afterwards, linger over a late dinner of local flavours. Puglian cuisine, with its orecchiette, vegetables and local wine, fits a medieval evening well. Nearby, towns such as Brindisi and Oria are easy to add to a longer stay.
